Makaha Resort Golf Club
What to expect: The 1969 main building is an architectural marvel: a high-pitched Polynesian-style roof has exposed beams through which skylights admit light. New arrivals are escorted, via shuttle, to their rooms. On the verandah, golfers, couples, and families mingle with conference attendees.
Amenity highlights: This 300-acre Makaha Resort's gem is the 7,077-yard, 18-hole golf course designed by William F. Bell; guests can take private and group lessons and practice on the driving range (surcharges). Tropical grounds with peacocks surround the main lounge and restaurant building, which has complimentary wireless Internet access and an outdoor pool and sun deck area. |
Insider tip: Just a half-mile from the Makaha Resort lies a 15th-century Hawaiian temple, Kaneaki Heiau. Restored in 1969 to include prayer towers, ritual houses, temple images, and an altar, Kaneaki offers a glimpse into Hawaiian history. Entrance hours are limited.
