Set in the foothills of the Waianae Mountains and overlooking the Pacific, this Makaha Resort Golf Club is two miles from Makaha Beach, long popular with surfers. The resort’s 18-hole golf course, designed by William F. Bell in 1969 and covering 7,077 yards from tip to tip, has a USGA rating of 73.2. Both private and group lessons are offered, and facilities include a driving range, pro shop, and snack bar.
The main building, which has complimentary wireless Internet access, features a wraparound verandah and opens onto a sun deck and 3,600-square-foot outdoor pool. Downstairs is a hair salon and a game and exercise room with pool tables, treadmills, and stair machine; Hawaiian cultural activities, including lei-making, are offered in the lobby. Two tennis courts also are available. This Waianae resort has a restaurant, and the lounge hosts live music on weekends. Business facilities at the resort include meeting rooms for 70 people and banquet space for 200.

Five main buildings and 12 two-story cottages are spread over 15.8 acres; together they contain 173 air-conditioned guestrooms accessed via open-air pathways and corridors. All accommodations at the Makaha Resort have private, furnished lanais with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and views. Driving directions from airport: Take the H1 Freeway west towards Waianae for approximately 45 minutes. Turn right onto Makaha Valley Rd after Waianae High School. Turn left at the fork in the road at the Makaha Resort sign.
Getting there: Airport shuttles and taxis are $76+ (subject to change); reservations are essential for a shuttle. Rental cars are available online.
Getting around: A rental car is the most convenient option for exploring the area, although a public bus system serves the entire island.
